Implants can be placed above or below the chest muscle. In rapid recovery breast augmentation, implants are usually placed on top of the muscle. Dr. Henderson will also discuss implant size, shape, and projection, and the incision that makes the most sense for you.

Breast Augmentation With a Breast Lift

If your breasts have also lost shape or sag, an implant alone may not give you the result you want. Adding a breast lift raises and reshapes the breast, and the implant restores upper-breast fullness. Many patients combine the two in one surgery. Dr. Henderson will tell you at your consultation whether you are likely to need a lift.

What are the anesthesia options for breast augmentation?

We offer multiple levels of anesthesia at our office-based surgical facility, from local to general anesthesia, and Dr. Henderson is known for awake procedures.

Many patients prefer to avoid general anesthesia. Dr. Henderson offers awake breast augmentation for appropriate candidates, using tumescent anesthesia with oral, IM, or IV sedation. Whether awake surgery is right for you depends on your health, your goals, and the plan for your procedure.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

  • First few days: Expect soreness, tightness, and swelling. Walking is encouraged.
  • First week or two: Many patients return to desk work in about a week, depending on how they feel and the technique used.
  • Support garment: You will wear a surgical bra or garment as instructed.
  • Exercise: Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting until Dr. Henderson clears you. Most patients return to full activity and exercise within 2–6 weeks, depending on the technique used.
  • Final shape: Swelling fades and implants settle over several weeks to months.

Risks and Safety

Breast augmentation is a common operation, but it is real surgery. Risks include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, scar thickening, asymmetry, capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the implant), and implant rupture or deflation. Implants are not lifetime devices, and some patients need revision surgery over time. A rare cancer of the immune system called BIA-ALCL has been associated mainly with textured implants. Dr. Henderson will review these risks and the implant surface and type she recommends for you.

Breast implants are not designed to last forever. On average, implants last about 7–10 years, and the chance of needing revision or replacement increases over time. Regular follow-up is important.

Saline or silicone: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. Silicone often feels more natural, while saline can be a good choice for patients who prefer a fill that can be adjusted during surgery. Dr. Henderson will walk you through the pros and cons for your body.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?
