What to Expect From Surgery

During breast reduction, Dr. Henderson removes excess breast tissue and skin, then reshapes and lifts the remaining breast. The nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the breast, usually while keeping them attached to their blood supply. Incisions go around the areola, vertically down the breast, and often along the breast crease. Some patients with less tissue to remove may be candidates for a smaller scar pattern.

Breast reduction can be done under general anesthesia or with tumescent anesthesia and oral, IM, or IV sedation. Ask us whether an awake breast reduction is an option for you.

What are the anesthesia options for a breast reduction?

We offer multiple levels of anesthesia at our office-based surgical facility, from local to general anesthesia, and Dr. Henderson is known for awake procedures. For appropriate candidates, breast reduction can be performed awake with tumescent anesthesia and oral, IM, or IV sedation. Your sedation can be adjusted to keep you comfortable and relaxed, and you are always able to protect your own airway, with no breathing tube needed. General anesthesia is also available.

What is the recovery time for a breast reduction?

  • First week: Expect soreness, swelling, and bruising. Dressings and a support bra help your healing.
  • Return to work: Many patients with desk jobs return in about 1–2 weeks.
  • Activity: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise until Dr. Henderson clears you. Most patients return to activity and exercise around 2–4 weeks.
  • Final result: Swelling takes weeks to months to settle, and scars continue to fade for a year or more.

Risks and Safety

Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, delayed healing, asymmetry, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. Breast reduction can affect your ability to breastfeed, and in rare cases nipple tissue may not heal well. Dr. Henderson will review these risks with you before surgery.

How soon can I exercise?
