Gynecomastia can result from many factors, including hormone changes during puberty or aging, weight gain, genetics, certain medical conditions such as liver disease, some medications, and recreational drugs such as anabolic steroids and marijuana. In some cases, a cause is never found.
Because some causes are treatable, it is important to address any underlying hormonal or medication-related factors with your primary care provider before surgery.

How Male Breast Reduction Works
The approach depends on what is causing the enlargement. Fat is removed with liposuction. Firm glandular tissue is removed through a small incision, usually at the edge of the areola. If you have extra skin, a technique that removes skin may be needed. The goal is a flat, natural-looking chest contour.
Surgery is performed with general anesthesia or with local or tumescent anesthesia and sedation, depending on your needs and the extent of the procedure.
Anesthesia Options for Gynecomastia Surgery
We offer multiple levels of anesthesia at our office-based surgical facility, from local to general anesthesia, and Dr. Henderson is known for awake procedures. For appropriate candidates, male breast reduction can be performed awake with tumescent anesthesia and oral, IM, or IV sedation. Your sedation can be adjusted to keep you comfortable and relaxed, and you are always able to protect your own airway, with no breathing tube needed. General anesthesia is also available.

What is the recovery time for male breast reduction surgery?
- First days: Expect swelling, bruising, and soreness. Walking is encouraged.
- Compression garment: You will wear a compression vest for several weeks to support healing and reduce swelling.
- Return to work: Many patients with desk jobs return in about 1–2 weeks.
- Exercise: Avoid chest and upper-body workouts until Dr. Henderson clears you, usually around 4–6 weeks.
- Final result: Swelling settles over several weeks to months.
Risks and Safety
Risks include bleeding, fluid collection, infection, contour irregularities, asymmetry, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, and the possibility that tissue may return if the underlying cause is not resolved. Dr. Henderson will review these risks and your specific plan during your consultation.

Can exercise or diet fix gynecomastia?
Weight loss can reduce chest fat, but it cannot remove glandular breast tissue. If the tissue is glandular, surgery is usually needed.
Where are the scars?
Incisions are small and typically placed at the edge of the areola or in hidden locations. Dr. Henderson will describe them at your visit.
Can it come back after surgery?
